My Dad Wrote a Porno

My Dad Wrote A PornoI recommend the podcast My Dad Wrote a Porno to anyone with a good set of headphones and the ability to keep a vaguely straight face in public.

With the endless TV programs, radio shows and podcasts now in existence, it seems like every single possible format idea must have been tried at some point. Podcasts tend to follow the journalistic storytelling style of This American Life and 99% Invisible, or some kind of chatty interview format. That’s fine, because it results in excellent shows like Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast, Distraction Pieces, and The Adam Buxton Podcast, but it makes it even more exciting when a truly unprecedented show appears.

It’s an excruciatingly hilarious concept. Jamie Morton and friends James Cooper and Alice Levine read the erotic novel ‘Belinda Blinked; 1 A modern story of sex, erotica and passion. How the sexiest sales girl in business earns her huge bonus by being the best at removing her high heels’ which was written by Jamie’s Dad, known only by his pen name: Rocky Flintsone.

It’s like E.L. James met Alan Partridge and copulated furiously. The combination of smut and business terminology is a match made in comedy heaven. Then, on top of that, there’s the commentary. Not only are the three presenters witty company, but every few minutes you remember that the man narrating the story is reading you the filthy fantasies of his own father. It’s like a ‘you had to be there’ moment, only you can be there. Thankfully, Rocky Flintstone also approves of the podcast. After a few episodes I started to feel a bit bad for finding his possibly serious attempt at titillation so funny that I laughed in the face of the old woman reaching for the granola in the cereal aisle, but I can only imagine that the podcast has resulted in a huge sales boost for Belinda Blinked.

I don’t want to say anymore in case I reveal some spoilers, but this is guaranteed to leave you breathless (from laughter).
